This player looks like it will be an amazing bargain!
For those with processing capability for all codecs in their pre/reciever this could be a great deal.
This looks to be a fantastic universal player for those of us that need that ability, and I'm glad to see that Oppo is sticking to an area where they are great. However, for a new player for someone like my Dad, who needs a Blu-ray player and doesn't have any DVD-A or SACD discs, it seems like the recent players from LG are a better pick for him with their extra online content (Netflix, Amazon, Vudu, etc...). I'm sure that Oppo is hoping to add additional functionality to their players, or new ones, in the future (I know I'm sure the DLNA streaming features they added to the BDP-83 now), so hopefully they can do that.
Does anyone know if Oppo plans to add 3D capability to BDP80 or BDP83?

I've read in other forums that Oppo has concluded that this cannot be done with a firmware update. It still appears questioable that any HDMI 1.3 device will be able to handle 3D.
I believe I read that Sony will provide a firmware update for the PS3 this summer that will make it compliant with the Blu-ray committee's 3D spec. This probably a special case, since the Core processor in the PS3 is used for all video functions unlike the ASICs used by most dedicated Blu-ray players on the market.
Herb, the official Oppo response is:

We are looking into the possibility of supporting 3D Blu-ray with a new player, but at this time we do not know when this may occur.

This feature of the PS3 (the ease with which different features can be added via firmware) makes it the most "future-proof" player on the market. This does not make it, necessarily, the best (it lacks MCH analogue output, it will not bitstream lossless codecs--all must be converted to LPCM in the player, it is not especially quiet, it doesn't easily integrate with universal remotes, it is not "universal", its DVD "upconversion" is not top of the line…) but despite these shortcomings, it does A LOT of things well (very fast loading times, easily upgradeable, bluetooth remote--I love that about mine as it allows me to solve the fan noise issue by placing the unit in another room, useful as a media server, I've never encountered a BD that would not play in it…and it's a decent game platform for those who like that). If I were buying my first player today, I'd likely go with an Oppo (chiefly for the MCH analogue output--I'm currently living with "lossy" BD sound with my HDMI-less A/V receiver) but I do not regret the PS3 nor would I hesitate to get one for a secondary system (assuming I were starting with an Oppo in the primary system).

The Oppo certainly seems more appealing to the traditional setup, but the PS3 is certainly no slouch.

Good analysis. Well crafted. Thanks.
