SECRETS CAVE

[Community of A/V Enthusiasts]

I just received some sample discs (trademarked as "2L") from a company called Lindberg Lyd AS, in Oslo, Norway. One disc is a sampler (see attachment 1 for the front, and attachment 2 for the rear which lists the tracks and the fact that it has 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio at 192 kHz sampling). This is the first time I have heard music at 192 kHz, and my hat flew off when it started playing. I used the OPPO BDP-83, which showed it as DTS-HD Master Audio, and the processor showed it as 192 kHz. I am going to contact these guys and see where I can get the complete discs for some of the sample tracks. Track # 3 for example, is mostly percussion, and you have not heard percussion like this!!! 192 kHz!!! Audio Nirvana is on its way!

My copy of this disc FINALLY shipped from Amazon yesterday and should arrive tomorrow. I'll make sure to leave some comments this weekend about how the SACD and Blu-ray compare to each other.

What is as exciting as the sound is the fact that the OPPO played without any glitches, passing the full 24/192 kHz signal to the processor, and the processor handled it as 192 kHz rather than down-converting it to 96 kHz or some other sampling rate. 24/192 - 5.1 music is a truly new experience! WOWSER!!!

I've had 2L's "Divertimenti" disc from Trondheim Solistene for a few months now (I think track 17 on your sampler is one of the songs) and I have to agree, the sound quality is absolutely fantastic. The Divertimenti disc comes with the hi-rez Blu-ray disc and also a 5.1 SACD. At least on my gear, the 192kHz surround trumps the SACD, which doesn't sound too shabby itself. Shame my Integra DHC-9.9 can't apply my Audyssey Pro settings to a 192kHz signal, but it sounds amazing as is.

I just got to track 3 on the disc, and the quality of that just blew me away. The first couple of tracks were good, but Track 3 is something else, it really uses the extra resolution, and surround, to envelop you.

These guys had a wonderful demo in Munich High-End Show last May together with Pure Audio.
If I remember correctly, they record using 384KHz sampling rate - aka future proof :-)

Setup was based using B&W 801 speakers..

My listening experience with these discs is that they have more body and detail than their SACD counterparts (both discs are in the package). This is my first experience with 192 kHz sampled music. All previous high rez PCM recordings were either 88 kHz or 96 kHz. The Blu-ray high rez music discs all seem to be with DTS-HD Master Audio. Does the Dolby TrueHD codec allow 5.1 channels of 192 kHz sampling? I wonder if the music uses FLAC or Meridian lossless compression. Perhaps it is not necessary if there is no video on the disc with the music.

JJ,
Looks like DD TrueHD does 5.1 @192. It drops to 96KHz for 8 channels.

I'm not so sure. I certainly would welcome the evolution of recorded music, but I had the same high hopes for SACD's. I think we are going to have to come to the realization that the general public is not willing to pay the premium price. We as audiophiles cannot generate enough commerce to push the recording industry to the next level. This, on top of an industry wide copyright-a-pobia epidemic has crippled the lossless audio market and I find it difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel for BD based music. Consumers always choose value over quality as evidenced by music downloads (MP3, etc.) and handcuff any attempt by music industry managers to justify the expense to move to the next level of technological advancement. It's MP3 Players and the like from here on throughout the foreseeable future.

I wish this weren't true, but I'm inclined to agree. We will see a smattering of dedicated BD music titles, but I'm concerned it will fall well short of the penetration of even DVD-A.

I just bought some 2L SACD's on a website: naxoxdirect.com . . they also had the blu-ray disks . . . one of the SACD's was mastered in a process they call DXD which was much better that their standard SACD's. Just a note . . .My blu ray copy of Divimenti has decided not to load anymore . . . I will see if they will send replacement Blu-ray . . . but as you said when they play it is A WHOLE NEW WORLD OF SOUND.

I just received a set of Blu-ray music discs. All of them are 7.1. It is difficult to listen to stereo after a session of high rez music in total surround format.
