SECRETS CAVE

[Community of A/V Enthusiasts]

I currently use Wireless N and G to stream media around my condo, and it works OK, but there are a lot of other wireless networks around that can cause interference and the speed isn't as high as I would like. I can't get access to run Ethernet in the walls, since that would be the best solution but not one that would work. I'm starting to look into either Powerline or Coax networking and was wondering if anyone has experience with either of these solutions?

802.11n and 802.11g should be good enough for uninterrupted music playback. You may have issues with DVD or Blu-ray video though. Have you tried changing your wireless channel so it doesn't overlap with other wireless networks and toggling any interference settings (if applicable)?
I've made sure I'm the only person working on my channel in the area, so I minimized interference as much as possible. Other possible steps including going to a dual band 2.4/5 Ghz router, as I have one laptop at least that can use the 5 GHz band, but it'll still have a relatively slow connection to my server, which I really want to speed up so networked backups/document syncs can run much faster than they presently do. My music playback is fine currently (even with FLAC or WAV sources), but as I try to have my DVD collection, and potentially my Blu-ray collection, ripped to a central server, it will become more important to have bandwidth.
On a different tact, have you seen Wiremold Cordmate? I have found for streaming HD video streams recorded at 25Mbps I need wired Cat6 and gigabit ethernet, and even 24bit 48KHz FLACs won't stream without rebuffering issues using wireless, so I use the above to hide the wires for a select few devices where I can't fish Cat6 int the walls. Comes with inner and outer angles - not perfect, but makes those wires unobtrusive I find. I also have a dual band Gigabit router as in the prior post, but that only gives me four wired ports, so have a few Gigabit switches...
Unfortunately, I have to run these cables too far for just hiding them to be practical, and since I'm in a condo I can't run wires through the walls either. It looks like the Coax networking is the best option, but I'll wait until I do a bit of rearranging in the condo before I change the setup I believe.
