SECRETS CAVE

[Community of A/V Enthusiasts]

All of the big movies these days seem to rely heavily on CG to generate monsters, menacing backgrounds, and characters doing things that would be impossible if they were not supported by cables that are brushed out of the scene during post-production. There is so much of it, they all seem to run together in plots and outcomes. I am losing the sense of real characters in the films. It's like watching random generation of flashing lights and colors with no purpose. I go away not knowing what the story was about, and I forget the whole thing by the time I go to bed. This contrasts with older films where the character took center stage, not the visuals and audio. I don't know where Hollywood is headed from here. Maybe a brick wall and it all comes tumbling down. There are no real movie stars anymore. Just people who are marketed by grocery store tabloids.

CGI can be well done or over done.

Over done: Anything on the SciFi channel, All Transformer movies, most superhero movies, most monster flix (ie- VanHelsing) and the "newer" StarWars.

Well done: Titanic, the original StarWars,Batman "Dark Knight", LOTR. And of course Pixar and Dreamworks

Eventually Hollywood will have a CGI John Wayne, Spencer Tracy and Bogart star in a movie together....and we will not be able to tell them from the real McCoys! Virtual movie stars of the past. YIKES!

I agree that the theatrical value of movies has degraded as have TV shows. If I look at my Netflix queue, a good 85% is British. Were it not for sports, II would sjmply cancel my cable subscription.
Effects were neat when they complemented a well acted and written story but in most current films, they are all you get. I leave many movies with the impression that I'd just watched a cartoon.

Somewhere on the web I saw an edited trailer for the new film '2012" with all special effects taken out. It was pretty comical. I totally agree with Jim's list of Overdone/Well Done films. I would add some of the graphic novel-inspired films like V for Vendetta and Watchmen to the Well Done list.
