hello!!!!!!! a subwoofer must always go low in frequency as below 45Hz, then only u can enjoy the sound. for this the amp must be too powerful & also the enclosure. most important the subwoofer itself. i have Sony's-1262P5 subwoofer amp designed by myself. the earth-shaking bass....... just tremendous.....

How low will it go? It looks like a automobile sub. Any pictures of your self designed amp?

I guess it depends on what one defines as "loud". To me, a subwoofer should be able to play 20 Hz at 100 dB at a distance of 1 foot with 5% THD+N or less.

That's why I love making my own subs, I can easily get 100 db down to 15 hz with minimal distortion. It is not exactly cheap to do it as the amps I use alone are close to $1,000 and the drivers typically range in the $400 to $500 range. I beat my JL Audio Fathom F113 with one of my first DIY subs in all areas except the JL was a bit more musical and had a bit more mid-bass. As far as slam, excitement and extension though I could not go back to the F113 and that was the last commercial sub I ever owned.
