SECRETS CAVE

[Community of A/V Enthusiasts]

I routinely listen to LPs and CDs (actually, mostly SACDs), and I have decided that I like jazz best on LP, but classical music best on CD. I think CD (SACD) handles complex sounds, such as several dozen instruments all playing at the same time, better than LP. But LP's warmth and involvement works beautifully with jazz trios, quartets, and quintets. I know LP has more distortion and a much higher noise floor, but it still sounds great, and I enjoy it.

I just got my first turn table this past year. I have been given a few older LP's that sounded OK... then my wife purchased me the Diana Krall "Live in Paris" LP for Christmas. I must say the quality of the recording blew me away. The used Thorens TD-165 I purchased sounds fantastic with a good pressing. I recently was given another 30 or so LP's, many from the late 70's to early 80's... unfortunately they do not sounds as good.

With this said, I agree that the Jazz LP I have sounds much better than my CD. I feel it is warmer with more depth. I was awed that I could hear the damper peddle being depressed and released when listening to the LP. I've also noticed that some good Lionel Richie has similar effects. I have also noticed on my Dave Matthews Band LP, which has many instruments, that it also sounds compressed and not very open. I've been wondering if this is a cause of the LP pressing or simply too many instruments. I would like to get some good classical and give it a spin. Any recommendations?
