I personally have not been able to tolerate smooth motion technology when it comes to films. We were on vacation and our house had a Blu-ray player and 120 Hz Samsung LCD, and as soon as we enabled the interpolation we couldn't stand the look. For...

I was considering some wall treatments in the living room but had the WAF kick in and was going to need to find a way around that. Now, you can get pre-made ones from people like Auralex that will let you print out some artwork for the panel so th...

You may consider recabling. I re-cabled my AKG K 702's specifically for this issue.

Could it reduce jitter? Yes. Does it? This depends. Many network media players will use a variation on a network file system (e.g., NFS) to "read" data over a network. Since it goes over a network, which can vary in effective speed from one node t...

I will give this a test when I get a chance to, hopefully in the next couple of weeks, as I'll be interested to know if DLNA streaming is less prone to jitter than playing the same thing through a transport.

Everything that detracts from the original signal as it passes from the source to the amplifier output can be measured as distortion. All you have to do is use your bench test setup to compare the analog output using the two methods you mentioned....

For all of the recent receivers and processors that I have tested, they all support streaming audio from a DLNA server, and either FLAC or WAV audio so I can stream my lossless audio rips without losing any quality. Does anyone know any more techn...

I asked Pioneer about this when they sent me their recent Elite receiver to review. They seemed to indicate that next years models is when we will start to see them vanish. The Yamaha receiver that I just received has no S-Video inputs, but it als...

My problem with 3D is that I haven't seen anything that would make me put up with the hassle of wearing glasses to sit down and watch TV or a movie. I tend to multitask as well a lot of the time, so I'm not going to be able to wear glasses while w...

Tru2Way is the update to CableCard that seemed to have died, but it looks like Intel is going to bring it back in a big way (maybe there's a Series 4 TiVo coming if it finally comes out as well). In one of the more interesting demos I had seen, In...

Do you prefer MP3 or high definition audio?
I try to listen to everything as FLAC or vinyl in the listening room, and as FLAC on my computer.

About Me

I've been writing reviews for Secrets of Home Theater since 2008. During the day I'm a SQL Server database developer with a BS in Computer Science. In my free time I enjoy movies (The Godfather Trilogy, Heat, Goodfellas, Amelie, Casablanca, The Graduate, Out of Sight, and Rushmore are some personal favorites), music (Radiohead, Wilco, The Beatles, Billy Joel, TV on the Radio, Bob Dylan, and Belle & Sebastian, for example), and enjoy trying to run competitively (I'm not that competitive, but I try). I've also started to take an interest in using my DSLR as much as possible, and if you were to keep track of what was on my TV most of the time, it would almost certainly be a sport of some sort, hopefully football.

CEDIA Wrap Up

CEDIA is done and I'm back home after spending three days doing nothing but seeing, listening, and talking home theater. It was a very different experience to see everything in one place and talk to the people that know everything about the products. So, a summary of some of my impressions and favorite things at CEDIA:

- Best sound: CEDIA doesn't really lend it's self to sounding as good as other conventions, but the Totem Wind Design sounded great and looked fantastic, and the Martin Logan CLX… Continue

CEDIA - Day 3 Report

My 2nd day of CEDIA was much less intimidating than the first day. I had a good handle on the show floor, and today I set out to see things other than Blu-ray players.

Media servers are becoming more and more popular. Microsoft had all of the current consumer Windows Home Servers on display, including… Continue

CEDIA Report - Day 2

I got into CEDIA a day later than some of the other Secrets crew, but ready to tackle my first home theater show. Adrian Wittenberg and I spent most of our day making a tour of the newest Blu-ray players that will be hitting the market in the coming months.

Here we see Sony's new 460 model Blu-ray play… Continue

Why no small Cablecard displays?

I work from home which has some nice advantages, such as the ability to keep a rack of AV gear on my desk so listen to music, and I have an old 17" Samsung LCD monitor that also has a TV tuner on my desk. It's quite old, though, so it's 4:3 and lacks any digital inputs and have been looking for an affordable way to replace it with a 1080p display.

However, while Samsung and other companies make a few 23-26" 1080p displays with PC inputs and ATSC tuners, none of them have a Cablecard slot in the… Continue

Thanks for the response Chris.
I would consider that this unit would be my main storage place as well. That why the Sony at 1TB looks attractive to me. I'll check out the link.
