"Yeah, it's a gimmick. But it will lead to true 4K sources in the home. Think of it as an intermediate step."

Good-bye, Ray...

Ray Harryhausen dies at age 92. If you are not familiar with his stop-motion technique in cinema, well, shame on you! My childhood imagination was greatly influenced by him...as well as some of my childhood nightmares! What's your favorite film that featured Ray's work?See More

UHD (4K) is coming. Do you care?

Sony will be releasing a series of “Mastered in 4K” Blu-rays this month. These are actually 2K discs that are compatible with any standard Blu-ray player and HDTV, but the 4K master (even when downconverted to 2K), is said to offer a superior picture to what you’ll get from sources mastered in 2K. Sony’s new UHD sets will incorporate…See More

Tell us about your Listening Room
My room is roughly 10X11, acoustically treated and dedicated to home theater and audio. My wife has given me free reign in its design and setup (so no flower vases or Hummel figurines on my speakers). 3 red leather reclining theater seats allow us to enjoy an occasional flick and view the Red Sox & Patriots in glorious HD.

Tell us about you....job,hobbies,family,etc.
I am the supervisor of the Nuclear Medicine department @ the North Shore Medical Center in the Boston area (thus the trefoil symbol across the top of my page). I have been in this field for over 21 years. My passion is in audio, with video being a close second. I enjoy classical music and am a devotee of Bach (and organ music in particular). I have learned over time that a quality system does not have to cost a lot of cash...but in this pursuit, I am always on the prowl for tweaks and upgrades. I am married (34 years now) with 3 children. I live on the beach just south of the NH border. Reviewing/testing new A/V products is a tough job, but someone has to do it. When I review a product, I am also looking at the "bang for the buck"...because I remember what it is like to be a "newbie" and on a budget. Remember, in the CAVE you can feel free to ask any questions...we are here to help!
Do you prefer MP3 or high definition audio?
High resolution audio puts me in my "happy place".

My A/V setup: (....at this moment in time)

Emotiva UMC-200 pre/pro
Emotiva UPA-1 200 watt monoblocks (2)

The Jazz Singer (Blu-ray): by Jim Milton

Known as the “Father of the Talkies”, The Jazz Singer was the first film to match sound and picture. By 1927, some short subjects had already been "talkies," and even a few features had some bits of synchronized music, but The Jazz Singer was the first to put them altogether on the Silver…

JJ Abrams to direct Star Wars VII-

It has been announced that Mr. Abrams, who directed the re-boot of the Star Trek franchise, will be in charge of the new, Disney owned, Star Wars films. Though I enjoyed the Trek film, I found his use of "flare effect" to be a bit too much for my taste. What will happen if it is overly applied to his new project? Is the man who gave us a new Kirk capable of delivering The Force? Or might it be The Farce?

What do you think?…

yes, it does favor horizontal dispersion, there not as susceptible to level as they appear. they do favor setting back a ways from your direct lessening aria .  the plates work like different size bells and are greatly affected by the type of material there made of,  and how far there spaced apart and how large there are.once under standing how the plates work, tuning is a preference.

Hello Jim, thanx for writing! I'm finally back to Hi-Fi after a few years, first step was a 3 years subscription to Stereophile! The CAVE looks pretty interesting too, now I just have to do some audiophile (but affordable) shopping! Cambridge Audio might fit me well, in that sense.

Thats exciting, I will be looking forward to the next review. Yeah, when I find a free moment I will do some customization here... might be a while. Ok I gotta get back to it.
