Does anyone have any experience with the Pure Direct Mode vs. digital outputs on their disk player?

I have a 'pure direct' mode on my Denon 3803 reciever. And, I hear some difference. More so with my Grado headphones than with speakers. In short, the line noise and hiss is almost completely eliminated when i use it. But, that's only at higher volumes. At normal listening volume I can't really hear any of the line noise.

I have only seen Pure Direct Mode on receivers, not DVD players. But, then, I don't get into the player menu very often. Pure Direct Mode on receivers bypasses all DSP and tone controls and turns off circuits that are not needed for that mode. Even the friggin' display turns off, at least on my Denon AVP-A1HDCI SSP.

I have Denon 5900 (quite old now), no audible difference I could heard.
Moreover, SlimDevices Transporter I bought last year is light years better.. Denon is now collecting dust..

I had the feature on my Denon 2900 and I have it now on my OPPO bdp83. I hear no difference so it's never used.

I have that ability in my Marantz DV6400 and I've A/B'd it--it makes no audible difference in my system so I don't bother with it. YMMV

I checked the Denon website, they don't have a manual for the 2910 anymore, but they do have one for the 2930CI which ,I would assume, should have the same functioning logic. Apparently the "pure diredt mode" logic allows you to turn off the video functions and process/output audio only.
For music listening, that should be desireable as it should eliminate any noise created by the video functions. That may or may not yield an audible improvement.
Why not just give it a try and see if you like it?
After all, this whole business is about your level of enjoyment.

That’s why he had me confused. Some CD players will allow you to turn off the digital signal for a pure direct analog.

If your using the digital output the d/a conversion is happening in the receiver. The conversion would be made in the Denon if you were using the analog output.
It's kinda of an article of faith that you keep the signal in the didital domain as long as possible , but it also helps to convert whereever you have the best DACs.
Whith the Dennon and the Sherwood, They're probably of about the same quality. You should get a good result either way.
If you using any DSP modes like Dolby PLIIX or DTS neo6 Your certainly better off using the digital output otherwise your doing one d/a conversion in the player then an a/d conversion and another d/a conversion in the receiver.
If your playing back in stereo, the best approach is to try both and use the one that sounds the best to you in your room.
ENJOY

It's a Denon 2910 universal disk player. ie, cd, dvd, mp3, etc.
I always thought that if you are playing a cd, you should use the digital output to the receiver. But where is the conversion made? In the player or the receiver?

I haven't encountered a disc player with pure dieect mode. I'm not really sure what it would do.
many pre/pros have a pure direct mode for analog inputs that bypasses all digital processing and merely provides volume control for the analog signal. If you have a very high quality source, this is a good option.
A disc player must by it's very nature , present either a digital signal, or an analog signal to the system. If analog, the digital information fron the disc must be converted to analog first, so some processing has to take place.
Could you give us any information on the model disc player that you are using ?
